OH MY GOD!!! The controversy - 1
I was watching this recently released muvie named OH MY GOD!! starring Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar where the lead role is that of an atheist and was performed by Paresh Rawal (name Kahnji Bhai in the movie). The person is showed to be sacrilegious and blasphemous at several instances throughout the movie.
It revolves around the idea that why a huge population of crores are staunch believer of god when no one has ever seen one, why so many temples, mosques etc etc , why such prolific blind, selfish donations of food, milk, money etc in the name of god and finally converging on the point that god should be searched within and not outside self.
In this article I would strictly focus on the first idea I mentioned above and leave the rest for the subsequent posts. This has been and is a very very interesting topic of discussion which I have seen embark anywhere out of nowhere and quickly there would be two groups for and against belief in god. This must be noted (and easily observable) that a majority of elders are a strong believer in god while a majority of us are opposed to it. Most of us who have been under immense western/modern influence have actually generated an unknown habit of believing only what is materialistic, visible or logical. I have observed that at times this latter bunch of ppl actually enjoy calling themselves anti-god, getting attention while putting forth their points, at times they get so excited that they start getting insolent towards god and everything related to it . Most would argue that they are educated human beings and dont believe in such things which does not even exist. They say this just because of one tenable argument that 'If there is god show me'. I had even found out that the ones who try to explain the existence/presence of god to the ranting (a relative term) opposition actually drops out of the conversation after grappling for a while or rather choose to stay mum for obvious reasons.
When I wonder about since when could have this difference in ideas seeded in the people of my country, all I could think about is the intervention of english men in the prevailing religions of our country in the pre-independence years. They could not find any existent proof about the sacred books namely Ramayan and Mahabharat or may be other reasons would have actuated the difference in beliefs following and spreading to date.
I have myself argued heavily on this topic time and again, deliberately, often to demean god just to understand extensively on it. In this matter particularly it was much needed for me to understand why my parents, everyone( I guess by default) up in my ancestors and anyone else in the country believing in god have/had this deep affection, respect and love for something that no one has ever confronted because somewhere I had this agitation that until I understand more on this GOD thing and what it means to the ppl in my country how can I jump to the opposite side of them just because it sound more fascinating ,logical or may be modern to oppose something illogical. I gave in more and more efforts and time on this.
It goes back a couple of years when once I got to know that the college authorities were distributing t-shirts on the Deepawali festival in the temple. I rushed to collect one for me. The quote mentioned on the back side stated 'WHY FEAR WHEN KRISHNA IS HERE'. I was led to an epiphany as the first thing I understood about god was that god(in whatever form) is there to provide one with strength in their testing tough times, provide them with confidence in whatever direction one is heading, help them be sanguine, be a friend of a lonely despaired indignant person. In all these things there is one thing common is that god is a synonym of faith. Faith that is generated from within. A belief that follows with you wherever you go just like where there is a heartbeat there is a heart and hence rendering god ubiquitous. Its the energy source to drive human beings to live laugh love.
I mentioned in my last article about 'I Me Myself' that no one can ever achieve a complete individuality. Afterall man is a social animal and hence everyone needs someone by their side at any given point of time. For example chilren need their parents until they grow, parents need their children when they grow old, ppl need friend for moral emotional support at good and bad times etc etc which no one can deny. But there is a catastrophe here. What are you going to do if somehow you lose your loved ones, a close friend or anyone else vital to you. Its very very tough to replace the lost one. In such situations often friends or the closest ones are the most helpful human beings to provide you with emotional support and thats where comes in the immaterialistic abstract god at your rescue. Your companion to provide strength, infuse a ray of hope to look forward to tomorrow, keep the fear of all kinds at bay.
I recollect an incidence from my childhood where some ppl were talking about a shlok from 'Bhagvad Geeta' that the materialistic is the most imaterialistic thing that exists as its vulnerable to getting destroyed sooner or later, nothing will stay permanent but what will remain forever with you is this companion of yours. I could immediately grasp the reality in the first part of the previous sentence but to understand the second part it took a lot of time and efforts and arguments :P.
Hence there cannot arise a question of GOD existing in the materialistic form rather what needs to be questioned to them is whats the definition of god when they defend god exist or does not.
This is exactly what was the ultimate crux of the movie and rest all were the penultimate shells to this core if I am not mistaken.
i think any discussion related to God is very trivial! we know why we needed his image.. now, one can give him any form that suits the person best..
ReplyDeleteyou got it.. :) :)
Deletenice analysis! I think that neither its required to give GOD any materialistic form nor is there anything wrong in doing so.. whatever strengthens one spiritually and his belief can act as a GOD. We have examples of normal human beings, animals, physical elements and numerous others being worshiped as gods.
