Amidst the rot!!!

Around a 100 days have passed since I posted my last article. Thanks a ton to all the readers as well as to the ones who praised it. :) So I begin once again.

Corruption is the favourite topic of discussion. I believe we spend as much time thinking and talking on it as on committing acts of corruption or on stopping it. You just need to utter the word amidst a crowd and all the people surrounding you will have loads to inveigh on the topic. It starts with 'Government' is corrupt. Then politicians are corrupt. Policemen, doctors, lawyers, judges, businessmen, insudtrialists all of them are corrupt. Honesty is passe and corruption is pervasive. They will say its the middle class ppl like them who suffers the most. I wonder who are these people tagged corrupt by the common men. Have they immigrated from other planets? No. They are all part of our society. One amongst us. Are they the only one emanating corruption and rest all are totally honest people? No.

Corruption is a weak thought process which makes a person take immoral decisions/selfcentric and easier/short cut ways to fulfill some personal gain. It makes sure that the rest of the universe is ignored totally. Whether its throwing out litters from your window onto the road outside or cluttering outer space with dead satellites. Be it pilferaging or embezzling. Be it a tussle to occupy a seat in an overcrowded metro rail or to win a seat of MP. Be it cheating in exams to pass or bribing for getting govt jobs. The list can go on and on.

I pass by this fruit bazaar often, the largest bazaar in Kolkata. The whole place is mired in chaos. Buyers haggling and yelling and sellers getting aggressive and disrespectful . Fruits getting stepped over and crushed in commotion.  Suffocating smell of rotten fruits scattered all across. I wonder, is the only important thing left is money? Should corruption be only calculated in terms of wealth? What about the disrespect showed to each other? Who will you live with when everyone around you turns truculent?  What about the food getting wasted while a major populace breathes hungry in our society? It will definitely not be a pleasant living surrounded in rotten thoughts, rotten actions and words. I almost thought to compose why corruption cant be dealt with.

But then one day amidst all the rot in the bazaar, I noticed a shabby old man. Sitting aside silently and selling fruits. His basket contained only a couple of fruits. Overripe, all of them. Anyone would throw away the fruit in that condition. I was overwhelmed to see that he would cut and throw the decayed part from the fruit and sell the remaining eatable portion. Why would he possibly do such a thing when he could easily beg and earn more than by selling fruits. Any fruit seller/buyer would give him alms. I could conclude that he probably uderstands the worth of food and that eatables should not go waste. Or he has got high self respect so as to work and earn in the way his emaciated body supports. Whatever it might be, it was truly inspiring to see someone with such strong thoughts and actions where today even the educated unemployed youths dont think twice before resorting to unfair means to earn.

Today everyone is beset with corruption from top to bottom. We want our country to be like west. Our society corruption free. Schools, colleges, hospitals, roads, libraries, govt offices all hi tech, organised and transparent. We are fed up with the govt. and its corrupt politicians. We want to fight against them. We want all the black money to be returned back from Swiss Bank. We want Anna Hazare to keep on the fight against corruption. We want a high standard life but what we ought to do first is to have a high standard of thoughts. We are obssessed with only the outside. Before fighting with the outside world, we must purify our thought process from within. Eradicate all rotten thoughts and ideas one by one. When pure thoughts turn into actions, I believe we wont need any Anna hazare, AAP . Everything will be automatically taken care of.  Like that extra ordinary old man, can we be the one against the rot, amidst the rot.

  1. I liked the example of an old man.... but i have an issue....i dont like when people talk about morality... corruption is like a crime.... if you mean to say that people should change their mind set...then I am sorry..the same rule should apply to every crime....the best thing is to make strict laws....mind sets wont change until laws are harsh.... and western countries are not corruption free but they have taken an initiative to make stronger laws...after Anderson case...SOX Act was made in US and it did help.....so its about strong laws.....but a nice write up I would say....
