The worshipper

The alarm is ringing out slowly beside a lazy and half asleep Vikram. It's been put to snooze every 5 mins for the past 1 hr. He decides to finally have mercy on the alarm, dismisses it and gets out of his bed. Its 8 AM. Ample time for everything. Lazily he walks to the hall. His eyes fall on the newspaper bundle kept on the dining table. The headline of an English daily read "BJP promises to build Ram Temple in UP election manifesto". Oh no, not again!! He exclaims. This is heard by his mother and she comes out of the kitchen. Good morning Vikram, she graciously greets him. He smiles back lazily. He is preoccupied with the Ram Temple agenda. Annoyed, he starts his speech. "What is wrong with the leaders in UP. What is wrong with the citizens there. Why is there so much dumbness all around? If Ayodhya is the birthplace of Lord Ram, how does it matter on which portion of land is the temple built? Every square inch of land is of Ram and worth worshipping." Vikram

Zindagi milegi na dobara -- I

I had wanted to sleep early one night. Remembering the childhood rhyme that says "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise.' and hoping when I get up next morning I will be wiser, wealthier and healthier :P  Of course with a zeal to make myself better than I was the previous night which would eventually make my life better than before. Life. An average of around 70 yrs. Then you are gone. Back to the soil. Taking another form. Maybe molecules of water in a bucket. May be orange. May be green tea leaves. A kite etc. Then maybe a space shuttle garbage floating in the outer space. No returning back to the soil thereafter. That's it. Interesting :) With all these imaginations I fell asleep. The next morning as I got up early as planned, I read whats app messages that talked about a mild earthquake that passed through Kolkata last night. I was kind of shocked. It was so strange. Really? An earthquake? Imagine you sleep one-night unaware that

#MarchForIndianArmy

Everyone must be well aware of  Burhan Wani from Kashmir whose story the News media had covered as a breaking news recently. I am not interested in making him or the media the subject of my article. But this happening in Kashmir had caused a strong reaction here faw away in Kolkata amongst my team members of India fIrst (Reminds me of my article The butterfly effect I wrote long ago.) They at once had decided to conduct a march in Kolkata in order to give respect to the INDIAN ARMY which had been defamed and insulted and questioned and disrespected by the population in Kashmir. Sunday the 24th of July  was decided for the event to march. The highly enthusiastic and active members of the team completed every formality on time. The rally was to start at 3:30 PM from Central Avenue where we have an idol of the most revered Maharana Pratap. Due to some unavoidable reasons I decided to join the rally a stop later from its start point, reaching there at 4:00 PM. I stood waiting at the n

Jainism through the lens of modernity

The religion I have to follow by birth is Jainism. For the past few years, I had got more involved with Jain ideologies and philosophy. The more I tried understanding it, the more it attracted me to learn further. More so because the practices that exists today are somehow very scientific, logical or spiritual though one of the hardest to follow and might also be irrelevant. After several months of observations and having an open mind for it, I could get a better idea about the beauty of its foundation thoughts and on a majority of practices followed. The core idea is nonviolence to any and every form of life on earth. Neither by your words nor actions should you incite violence on others or harm them. LIVE AND LET LIVE with all due respect. Another important aspect is not having desires or rather putting efforts into controlling them. Over the years I have observed elders take a determination/vow of not having to say for example curd for a week and fulfilling it without fail. The

Contraption

I was talking to a colleague for some work related activity and somehow just got reminded of Tech Fest that engineering colleges used to organise annually. Every college would have a 3-4 days tech fest. There used to be an event named CONTRAPTION. Its dictionary meaning is "a machine or device that appears strange or unnecessarily complicated". In the contraption event the c hallen ge would be to perform an activity with the maximum number of mechanical steps possible. For example if you are asked to lift a block, you should not do it in 1 step by having some mechanical lever that would straight away lift up the block. Instead it should be done in a series of steps, one activity triggering another and further, so that the participant performing the desired task in maximum number of steps or with maximum time consumption or both wins the contest. Although I had never myself participated in any such event, I was fascinated with how 1 activity would trigger another then anothe

#Meatban

I am a proud vegetarian. I remember that once I had consumed a piece of cake that was not eggless which I realised after I had ate it. So I can't boast myself of being a 'pure' vegetarian. Well, unlike the possibility of someone being a pure vegetarian, unfortunately there is no chance someone can be a pure non vegetarian. But I have observed they are mostly proud of being a non veggie. Thats interestingly amazing. I am reminded of a conversation I had with one such proud n-v in a colleague's farewell party. It was a gathering of 30+ team members. I was the odd one out amongst all the other n-v loving colleagues. One of the senior realised that and tried to embark a conversation. He --- "Oh, what raw food you are eating.  I feel so pity for you." (Pride on his face, simultaneously devouring a leg piece.) I --- In thoughts (I totally understand its the taste that keeps people go crazy for n-v food stuff but        that sentence I just heard from you is to

OH MY GOD!!! The controversy - 2

Its been around one and a half years I suppose I wrote about the much debated modern era topic Gods.  OH MY GOD!!! The controversy - 1 .  Well this 2nd article is solely about sharing my understanding on crores of gods that exists in my country that I have learnt in this time duration. Honestly its amusing to see that we have a god for everything. Energy- Lord Shiv/Parvati, Son of Air- Hanuman ji, Rain - Indra Dev, Water - Ganga Maiyya, Knowledge - Saraswati ji and the list may go on  and on. Why I say it is amusing is because just imagine -- After I get up in the morning, I pray to the Sun God for all the light energy it provides to Earth which is a primary cause of life on this planet. Then I pray to the Annapurna devi for the food available to fill the stomach, pray to our very own parents and get blessings from them for its they who raise us with so much love and affection till we are of age and further, pray to Saraswati ji for the all the learning and knowledge, pray to laxmi j
